I just got this email. Funny thing is, I don't have any kids enrolled in Merit — unless it was without my knowledge. Confused

Dear Distance Education Parent and Student,

Due to financial reasons Merit College Preparatory Academy is discontinuing its Distance Education program for the 2013-2014 school year. Your son and/or daughter is currently a Distance Education student. We will be un-enrolling ALL Distance Education this week. We will assume that you do not wish to be an on-site student. Attached to this email you will find a withdrawal form that is required. Please fill it out and return it to the school or email it to our registrar at tracy.mecham@meritacademy.org.
There is space available, however, for your student to be an on-site student. Should you decide you would like to register as either a full-time or part-time Merit student please contact our Registrar, Tracy Mecham, at 801-491-7600 Ext. 715 by 3:00 pm Friday, September 27th 2013.

Warm Regards,

Kim Mitchell, M.S. Ed.
Director

Doesn't surprise me. I kinda felt this was coming. Dave and Kim weren't coming to agreements. Harmony was taking all but $35 of their funds. And in some cases how they had it figured out the contract was putting Merit in debt. Also the test scores of the Harmony kids last year were so bad it brought their tests score down really low. I can see more and more of this happening. Especially with the distant ed students doing the test out forms. The contracts Harmony had were not legally valid, I am told by the USOE.

Good time to move over to the Canyon Grove people if they need it. They are ok without the testing. And give a better reimbursement.

I've heard both that Canyon Grove must be added today and also Monday. Do you know which it is? I guess Lori better get in here, she seems to know about it. :)

I looked at Canyon Grove a bit, but it didn't seem to match us very well. We mostly just like the accreditation for doing our own curriculum. I can't see that they support that.

And --- boom -- their math is Common Core aligned. I pulled Monica out of Harmony because at the high school level, everything has to map to CC and I'm just not going there.

I don't think the reimbursements are more, unless I misread. CG offers $300 for curriculum and $150 for supplies. Harmony offers $400 (for returning, $300 for new) for general and $125 PER flex course, so for middle school, that's another $500 (with four flex courses). In addition, they offer big subsidies for classes, like BYU Independent Study, Scera, Best in Music. At least that's how I understand it. Could be wrong.

Tell me more about Harmony's test scores, I didn't hear anything about it.

Here are the phone numbers and email for Canyon Grove:

Laurie Compton (801-541-5530) , lauriepcompton@gmail.com

I think they do accreditation for doing your own curriculum. I think $450 is your incentive and they have the same course prices for the other as Harmony. They do all the same third party vendor subsidies. I don't know the online vendors they have.

In regards to Harmony test scores: In speaking with the director, when evaluating which students needed the most remediating and help they discovered they were the Harmony kids. And the numbers of students from Harmony which did not test was such a high percentage that it would not be good for them to be able to get rated this coming year.

Another resource to get our own stuff accredited is through Florida. They don't do the Utah Math so traditional math is ok there. I have to do some more research to find the name but it is the same thing as NAHRS.

I was just pulling info off this page:

http://www.canyongrove.com/dis.....earning-2/

I'm not surprised by the testing results really. My kids took it, we did not prep or do anything about it at all — because I think it's bogus to prep for standardized tests because it ipso facto skews the test. When they went to take it I said, "Try to get the right answer, but if you don't know, just put B." Cool

I just don't care about them because I think they just show how well you do on that test. I don't actually know how my kids did though, whether they pulled the average up or down, I have no idea.

I just sent an email to CG. If registration is still open and I hear back, I'll report.

Everything on my blog is what she sent me. They haven't updated their website as of yet.

Here is what they wrote in an email to me. It looks like Monday, Sept. 30th is the cut off date. Also if anybody is wanting to enroll Kindergarten, the reimbursement is for the full amount (not half as is specified on their website), per Lauri Compton. You can also opt out of the vision test.

Quote:

Please be sure that your child is up to date on their immunizations.
We will need a copy of their immunization record or exemption form as
well as a copy of their original birth certificate for registration.
Also, for any Kindergarten students, a proof of vision screening is
needed. Please send this required documentation in to Canyon Grove no
later than September 30, 2013.

Welcome to the Canyon Grove Academy Family. We look forward to a
wonderful 2013-2014 school year with your family!

Sincerely,

Admissions

Thanks, Shelly.

Yes, registration goes through Monday.

I just got an email from Laurie, but it was just a copy/paste of what's on the site — which I already read. I sent her a reply with specific questions, but it bounced (or at least sent me a bounce notification).

The biggest issue, perhaps, is that CG only goes through 8th grade. I'd actually like to find a place to accredit Monica's high school stuff, but we want to use our own curriculum (it works!) and we do not want to "double teach" to pass through the Common Core hoops. (What a waste of time!)

If anyone knows of a program like the OLD high school Harmony, I'm all ears!
